Drive-By Shooting In Sarasota
A Bay area neighborhood in Sarasota was the scene of tragedy on Saturday night after an unknown gunman opened fire, killing a female member of the armed forces and injuring four other residents. Bullet holes sprayed the door of a a Sarasota home, walls and windows, a somber reminder of the seemingly senseless violence. Crime scene tape still drapes from a pole, keeping spectators back. Chanel Carter says her friend, Brittany Wine, was shot during the drive-by shooting on Leon Avenue. One witness told reporters "A whole bunch of cops were coming, so we stopped them and we told them that she was back there and needed help and then we kind of comforted her. Tried to talk to her. They told us to back up."
Sarasota law enforcement officials reported that the person or persons shot five people. US Army soldier Naomi Clyburn died at the scene. Police later located a chevy pickup truck that matched descriptions provided by witnesses. It was abandoned on Coconut Avenue. Per Captain Paul Sutton of the Sarasota Police Department..."The truck is distinctive. The tires are oversized and it's a custom paint job. So we hope it's a truck people will remember and so if they say we saw this person or a group of people in this truck, that is information we would like to have as part of our investigation." Captain Sutton added, “At this point we haven’t made a connection between the registered owner of the truck and this crime. If someone other than the owner has been operating this truck we’re hoping that someone can say this is who I saw with this truck.”
Emergency crews, quick to the scene, took three of the four people injured in the shooting to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment. The fourth, who suffered far more serious injuries, was taken to Blake Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
The sister of the deceased soldier, who asked to not be identified, told reporters "I don’t know what happened. I just came out the door and my sister was shot.” Naomi Clyburn was pronounced dead at the scene. Naomi was a proud member of the United States Army. She served as a Chemical Operations Specialist, according to her Facebook page. The local High School graduate was on leave from the Army, in order to take care of her seven-month old baby girl.
“She didn’t even get to see her daughter’s first Christmas,” Naomi’s sister added in response to the devastating Sarasota crime. “That’s all she talked about….her daughter.”
